The comment of making a song in Ancient greek just to piss of Greeks what's the purpose of it? As a Greek i wouldn't mind someone foreigner trying to learn Greek, so just making this comment a video provokes a negative behaviour.

My problem with this is that I am so annoyed at the person who made the request like this ("make the Greek mad") but it gets worse because there are Greeks getting mad at the comments in a wrong way so that person is proven right :////// That person makes a reference to the long standing animosity between modern Greek speakers and western classicists obsessed with the Erasmian pronunciation. Or the reconstructed one. The TikToker has had beef with Modern Greek speakers in an older video. That's what was referenced there.

Anyway, the tiktoker himself is not wrong in his recitement when it comes to the technical aspects of it. The problem with it is that - who knows how - even though he employs the prosody in the recitation, he still sounds incredibly monotonous. And incredibly English lol. If I had to listen to all that by a rhapsodos as an Ancient Greek I'd rather kill myself. Imagine 15,693 lines of verse like that. Listen to it and tell me I am wrong.

And not to be that person, but the TikToker kinda looks like he's torn between being the most English person ever and the descendant of Brad Pitt's Achilles.

I am so mad at Greeks because the radical western classicists (new term I just invented!) lack so much self-awareness that it would be easy for Greeks to argue, and yet Greeks are divided between "GREEK PRONUNCIATION SAME ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1000000000 BC" and "a blondie said it therefore it is the unquestionable truth and I dare not develop an insight on it by myself". There's no in between. I hate us.

And I say they lack self-awareness because even though they obsess so much over the textbook, (which is western theories mixed with western interpretations of scarce ancient Greek sources, without questioning even for a second the accuracy of said interpretations and even the ability of the ancient texts to convey in script the sound and the oral delivery of the language accurately and easily enough for foreign people to understand it perfectly many centuries later and with no exposure whatsoever to said language), they fail so much at removing the inherent elements of their own language.

Like, when Ancient Greek was said to be a very beautiful and unique sounding language, and you end up sounding like the blandest English gibberish poem ever, something must not be quite right. This is not evident just in Greek. He speaks a lot of languages (and kudos to him) but he said Mahabharata and it was like "Muh- hub- arr - atttah... and a cup of tea, please". Come on. I was petty enough to pronounce Mahabharata loudly and then went to GoogleTranslate and listened to the pronunciation in Hindi (no pronunciation option available for Sanskrit). I am closer to it than he is. (3,2,1 until some wild Brit classicist claims the English version is closer to Sanskrit than Hindi is XD). But okay it was petty and not all that scientific on my part, I admit.

Whoever wants a GOOD recitation of Ancient Greek, try Ioannis Stratakis - Podium Arts on YouTube. He sticks to the "textbook" and so far he is the best I have heard.

P.S. I saw somewhere in the comments under his posts the explanation / excuse that some words have to be pitched / stressed incorrectly in prosody because otherwise they won't fit in the hexameter.... while this indeed has to happen sometimes, if it happens too often you are doing something wrong, Greek is one of the best languages to modify and switch the placements of words in order to fit in the meter or rhyme just right and if memory serves me, “having to be incorrect” not as a frequent occurence as stated.

PS2: the more I listen to it the more need for such excuses I notice….

Hi anon! This is a complex answer. Research is never simple lol obligatory disclaimer I'm just some random enthusiast and in no way an academic, this is just how I go about it.

I find essays in a variety of places. JSTOR is where most of the stand-alone essays came from (IE; not otherwise published in a book, sometimes in journals I cannot find). I’ve been very fortunate to have friends lend me their college bypass so I could download from there, as I would be unable to access them otherwise.

Sometimes, while reading books, like The Friend by Alan Bray, there will be a reference to an influential essay or article, such as Faithful Unto Death, which describes the joint tomb of Sir John Clanvowe and Sir William Neville. For that paper, a friend had to request it from their own institution, wait for it, and then give it to me. I'd been staring longingly at it for literally years but couldn't justify paying the $30+ asking price for a PDF. I was lucky, once again, to have help.

Another way to find these academic resources is by reading the footnotes or bibliography in the back of books and tracing the source of individual essays or articles back to a bigger collection contributed by a variety of authors contained in a single volume (like A Companion to Malory I shared a few days ago). I learned about Alan Bray specifically because other essayists kept referencing his work! From there, I sought him out. The same has happened as I delved into Zoroastrian studies. The literature there is limited (at least in the English language, as I cannot read Persian or Hindi). So I found myself researching in a circle, following the trail of names until I ran out of scholars and they just referenced each other's work back and forth. I had consumed the entire body of [English] literature on the subject, so I knew I had come to collect the same resources as these essayists and historians had! Once you start going, "Hey, it's my friend [scholar] again!" you know you're in deep haha!

Much the same has happened with Arthurian legend. Norris J Lacy, known for his work as head editor of the translation team that tackled the Vulgate, is everywhere. He's the editor of countless textbooks, translator of medieval poems and prose, and even wrote his own retelling, A Camelot Triptych. Once you find someone in a field of interest that pops up a lot, you can begin searching for relevant resources through their name, rather than relying on blindly sifting through thousands of papers tagged "King Arthur".

Essayists don't make any money on this stuff. Institutions even charge people to publish their work. It's perfectly acceptable to obtain that knowledge however necessary. If you don't have college access yourself nor a friend who can help, there are websites to pirate from. (Please use a VPN to protect yourself.) Some websites are specific to the field, like science, which isn't my expertise, so I can't offer guidance there. But I've had luck on annas-archive.

It can be easy to assume everyone has the same opportunities, that a screenshot or link to JSTOR is sufficient for someone to access the same information mentioned in a post. It's tough when tumblr doesn't let you upload a PDF! It makes sharing resources difficult. One could dedicate money and cloud space to it (like I do with Google and MEGA drive) or upload it to a discord server where it can't breach containment and reaches only a limited audience. It's not ideal! And it's no individual's responsibility to tackle the problems with academia and gatekeeping, of course, but my goal is to source as much of what I discuss as I possibly can, as well as share those resources with anyone who could benefit from them. A librarian basically lol so I'm glad the essays I've shared have been beneficial to you!

Overview

In the heart of Toronto, at Sheraton Hotel, in a light breezy summer day, an annual event was hosted by a prominent Muslim social media platform that is committed to dismantling doubts and fostering faith and conviction. Being invited to Sheraton Hotel reminded me of another event I went to many years ago which was a small gathering with exquisite dining and fine foods but it was not that! For those who have been to RIS (Reviving the Islamic Spirit) it was closer to that venue, if not THAT venue. This was a spaced out hall with seating arrangement facing a panel. A walkway with several vendors and an art and photo exhibition. It was a place people across the GTA came to join a gathering to heal hearts, foster faith and conviction, and look for avenues to contribute meaningfully. The gathering had a calm serenity that filled your soul with tranquility, and it was all in all, a peaceful social environment.

The event included speakers, a photo exhibition about Masjid Al Aqsa, an art exhibition and several vendors including organizations delivering humanitarian and medical supplies (Jordon/Egypt), other vendors included social services including support for the homeless at Nisa Foundation that has contributed to sheltering 1, 127, 396 in their 2022 annual report across Canada. Other partner organizations included mental health and domestic abuse services such as Sakeena and Naseeha helpline. It also included a collection of books by various organizations.

I decided to go check this event because this organization wrote several articles including ones comprehensively looking at monotheism, the problem of evil amongst various other topics people often think about in relation to their faith.

It is unfortunate that many organizations have been heavily scrutinized by some organizers and activists. These include NCCM, CJPME, Yaqeen Institute as well as various masajid across the GTA. In my opinion, it is a heartbreaking situation and I personally believe there is always room to do more and listen to, and center Palestinian voices and their demands as they have lived experience, understand nuances, and have loved ones being attacked and murdered in the most cruel way. Nonetheless, it does not seem fair to discredit all the work that is being done due to differences in theological beliefs between conservative and more liberal Muslims, especially around sensitive contested topics when there is a need for urgency.

Omar Suleiman from Yaqeen insititue is ethnically Palestinian and has dedicated a large portion of his time, resources, personal platforms to advocating for the Palestine cause. Dr. Omar Suleiman was one of the speakers at this conference among others including Zaynab Ansari, Bonaa Mohammad, Ibrahim Hindy and several others from the Yaqeen Institute. Partnership vendors included Nisa Homes, UOSSM that delivers medical and humanitarian aid, Seeding Books, and several others.

In this article, I will highlight first share some of the key insights from the panel. The second section will look at different exhibitions. Finally, my conversations with a few attendees at the conference (who will not be named).

A collection of insights

There were various insights during the talk around themes of The State of the Ummah, Gaza Diaries, Anchors of Resilience, The Impact of Charity (ripple effect), Should Young People Really Lead?, A Poem by Bonaa Mohammad, Anchors of Justice, and What Can I do? These insights include:

The people of Gaza have shown remarkable faith and resiliency. People will not miss their prayers and everyone that has visited has given testimonials that the people will have the Qur'an that they will recite to bring their hearts tranquility. The sisters will not remove their hijabs. Their conviction in their faith is remarkable.

The sheer amount of atrocities that they have faced are at an unprecedented scale. The Yemen crisis is one of the worst crisis and this one is 10 times more difficult with people's teeth removed and gums going inward, the spread of infections, hands and limbs that have been severely injured due to bombings including white phosphorous and other cruel measures against civilians including little children

There is a need for strategic organizing

The political and social system is largely corrupt if it can enable such things and not hold perpetrators accountable for gross human rights violations

There is an intergenerational ripple effect that comes from generosity and it is contagious

The brain has this thing about maintaining homeostasis in the body and the mind so it tolerates substances, it sweats if the body is under prolonged heat or stress and unfortunately it does this each time we are exposed to atrocities. Our humanity dies as we become more and more desensitized.

Strong emotions can be channelled effectively through making dua (supplication)

Dua should not be limited to one's own needs, wants, desires but things outside of ourselves as well because you never know which dua is going to get accepted.

It is important to be merciful to the young

Young people in the community often have a lot of zeal and energy but may make mistakes. Their mistakes should not be a reason to crush them completely.

Many people have made huge sacrifies including with their careers due to their advocacy and deep sense of humanity. They need support

It is important to honor elders including aunts and uncles that volunteer their time at the masjid but may have a cultural and generational gap.

Praying witr at night

Having habits that are exclusively between you and Allah swt

Lightening serious situations through laughter/jokes

Do not take the torch and use it to burn everything down.

Do not crush people's spirits because of one mistake

Have youth boards in masjid

Make dua for halal rizq which comes with responsibilities including taqwa (God consciousness), ibadat (prayer), and generosity.

Protect those who do not have power from those who do have power

Justice is the basis of Islamic theology

An umaah that is a witness to makind, a just and balanced umaah

Surah Nisa highlights justice in the family and other ones to justice in the community

Oftentimes, criminals specifically target witnesses including journalists and aid workers because they hold perpetrators accountable.

Important to reawaken global consciounce

Art & Photo Exhibitions

The art exhibitions included calligraphy using woodwork as well as calligraphy canvases. Generically in the form of Arabesque art which is linear, geometic, intricately detailed and involve nature, geometrical shapes as well as calligraphy.

The Photo exhibition included history of masjid Al Aqsa, particularly the dome. I learned that masjid Al Aqsa is not just the golden domed dome but that it is a 'totality of the complex that contains several mosques, domes, prayer benches, fountains'. Furthermore, there is a lot of history including rebuilding it following an earthquake during the rule of the Ottomons as well as different prophets in significat markings including the divine ascension of the Prophet Muhammad (saws), Sulaymans' Dome amongst other historically significant sites.

Conversations with Attendees

Oftentimes, unless I have several deep conversations and have formed a trusting relationship, I usually like to explore places on my own. This removes social conventions, restrictions and expectations and I can take time to explore, do event or travel photography and engage with more people at a deeper level. It also helps create a safer, non judgmental environment.

I ran into a friend and I discussed different things including my engagement on SM, specifically twitter and social media etiquettes.. We also did some generically catching up.

I sat beside a lady during the talk who decided to share an oranges with me. She was really friendly and the kids also kept saying hi to me or smiling at me.

The prayer spaces were generically calm and serene.

Waiting for prayers I sat at a lounge where I talked to a highschooler who had come all the way from Niagra with family who generically engaged with scholastic work from the 60s or earlier periods but thought this speaker would provide insightful point of view.

Conclusion

All in all it was a pretty serene gathering. I found that the talk provided key insights and perspectives. It was also a way to collectively share and address concerns. A couple of people took the shahadah - the testimony of faith and reverted to Islam. The vendors were highly credible organizations that had done a lot of ground-level work in the medical, humanitarian and social service sector. There were interesting books, merchandise (Palestine t-shirts, water bottles etc.). The photo and art exhibitions were very informative. The prayer hall was serene. Most attendees were pretty kind and friendly.

It really filled my soul with knowledge, peace and tranquility. For a moment while a speaker did a talk, I felt a momentary engulfing sorrow, something that I cannot truly understand but for the most part, it was an beautiful and blessed gathering.

"Kumusta ka, kaibigan?"—this question may sound simple, but it holds much meaning for me as I journey through my college life. It's filled with many challenges and sometimes, it feels too much to handle. When I try to respond honestly, I'd say I'm managing, surviving, or sometimes I'll just simply say “im fine, I love my college life" despite the heavy weight of academic and personal struggles.

I don't really know how to answer this question. Siguro ikukwento ko na lang ‘yung experience and realizations ko since I went to college. Start pa lang ng semester, I already doubted if kaya ko ba talaga ‘yung program ko or if this is really for me? I enjoyed being here since I have also made many friends who help me to make my program easier, but there are times when I still have a hard time because it seems like I'm the only one who is struggling. Aside from these, I've been feeling utterly exhausted—perhaps the toll of hours spent commuting. (disadvantage ng hindi pinayagan mag-dorm, you have to endure the 2-hour journey to and from the campus.) Then there was a time when I felt like I was stuck in a loop. Every day's a replay of the last. Bed, phone, lectures – the unholy trinity of boredom. even if I do my best I always feel like it's not enough. or maybe I'm not really giving my best? why does everyone seem to excel, but I'm the only one who doesn't? I'm the only one who's struggling but the suffering doesn't pay off. I don't know what the problem really is or if it's really me. I've been very unproductive since I went to college, actually, since I was in grade 12, I couldn't keep my personal life away from acads. Then ngayon, I'm drained each day. The routine seems monotonous. Work feels overwhelming. There are times that even if i didn't do anything im still exhausted. Ang daming days na walang pasok gusto ko na lang matulog palagi. I hope my day will be happier soon. It's funny that I wrote a lot of prose's and poems saying that it's okay to be mediocre and there's nothing wrong with it. Yet I cry when I think that I am mediocre and that the people around me are running marathons then there's me labelling myself as “slow-learner”. it's so hard to be an optimist when your life has fallen apart.

A Day in Boarding School Life

Mumbai Mornings:

The relentless Mumbai monsoon drummed a rhythmic beat on the hostel roof as Ananya stirred awake. It was 4:30 AM, and the pre-dawn darkness was only broken by the faint glow of her bedside lamp. Unlike her classmates in spacious homes, Ananya's mornings began with a quiet ritual – packing her lunch for school. A simple meal of roti, sabzi, and a handful of cashews, carefully wrapped in a cloth bundle, ensured she had something familiar amidst the busy school day.

Breakfast and Assembly:

बीत गयी तमाम उम्र मेरी यूँ ही इस गुजारिश में !

एक लम्हा जी लू में जी भरकर मेरी एक ख्वाहिश में !!

क्या खबर किस मोड़ पे कब ये सांसे थम जाए गी !

बात दिल की मेरे इस दिल में ही दफ़्न हो जायेगी !!

फिर न कोई शिकवा होगा और न ही कोई फरियाद होगी !

when you sit to discuss the proposals of what is on offer in these days of professional overtures , you discover apart form all else the context of the World and the Universe in more than one way ..

The inventions the ideas that float about on how to make the work we do compatible with the ease of execution and in the minimum of effort ..

We , as I said , live in different times and the change happens each day .. it is best to either not keep up with the Kumars, Iyers, Singh’s , Mukerji’s, (and not the oft understood phrase .. keep up with the Jone’s)  all across the varied communities of the Country .. and be in independent realms of our own reckoning to deserve a living free and unobservant .. form all that beckons us each day ..

OR ..

dive into the technological exigencies , research the mode and invents and their applications .. know the language that threatens to burst upon us in such velocity that will uproot all that was understood and practised in calmer times and environs  ..

The human speaks and thinks with speed now .. the expression and the brevity of the express .. the understanding by the other in no uncertain terms and conditions, that this is what it is .. take or leave .. 

and when they have left the environ of discuss you sit and wonder where we are all going .. 

going certainly not for the GATE at JALSA tomorrow, for .. there is work on location which can only be given permission for on  a Sunday ..
